Seoul National University has opened SNU Robotics as a national research laboratory for next-generation physical AI. The program has an unusually long horizon: government and university support can provide roughly 10 billion won per year for research and infrastructure for up to ten years.

The institute opened on August 18, and SNU published new details on August 25. Its focus is not another showcase robot, but an architecture that develops a robot’s body and intelligence together.

Distributed intelligence instead of one central brain

SNU Robotics wants individual components to process relevant sensor information locally while cooperating with higher-level AI. That could reduce latency and make complex machines more robust than systems that depend on one central decision maker.

Another priority is modular reconfiguration, allowing robots to change form and function for different tasks and environments. The program also includes bio-inspired systems, wearable robotics and technologies for medical applications.

Research funding as industrial policy

The scale is notable. Ten billion won per year is currently roughly seven million US dollars. If supported for the full term, the program could reach about 100 billion won. That figure is a funding horizon, not money already paid in full.

The institute is also expected to build an ecosystem for robotics startups. South Korea is therefore combining basic research, talent development and commercialization in one long-term program.

Physical AI is often framed as a contest between foundation models and humanoids. SNU emphasizes a different idea: intelligence can be distributed throughout a mechanical system. If successful, that approach may matter more for wearable, medical and modular robots than a single oversized central model.
