Humanoid robotics startups are usually judged by spectacular demos, funding rounds or announced production volumes. A recent patent analysis applies a different yardstick: it compares the strength of relevant intellectual-property portfolios held by companies focused on humanoid robotics that have publicly demonstrated at least one bipedal walking robot. The result puts Chinese developers at the center of the field, but it does not provide a ready-made forecast of future market leadership.
Key takeaways
- Fourier, AgiBot and LimX Dynamics occupy the first three positions in the patent-based ranking.
- Six of the ten companies are based in China, three in the United States and one in Germany.
- The analysis covers more than 26,000 patent families across interaction systems, morphology, and control and planning architectures.
- Patents indicate technological positioning, not necessarily product maturity, manufacturing capacity or commercial success.
- For industrial partners and investors, the list is therefore an early indicator rather than a final verdict.

How to read this: The order reflects the strength of relevant patent assets. It is not a ranking by revenue, valuation, shipments or long-term operational reliability.
How the ranking was built
The study defines humanoid robotics through three technical fields. Interaction systems cover functions such as grasping, operating equipment and working with people. Morphology includes human-like body structures, bipedal locomotion, articulated limbs and whole-body coordination. Control and planning architectures address motion planning, task control and autonomous behavior.
The method does not simply count patent families. Its Patent Asset Index combines portfolio size with technological relevance and geographic market coverage. A smaller portfolio can therefore score above a larger collection of narrow or less influential rights. The dataset reflects the position at the end of 2025.
Why China takes six places
The geographic distribution is not accidental. China combines policy support with dense supply networks for electronics, actuators, batteries and manufacturing. At the end of 2025, inventors based in China accounted for about 73% of active patent families in humanoid morphology and 63% of measured portfolio strength. This reveals enormous breadth, while also showing that average strength is not the same as raw volume.
The United States holds far fewer morphology-related patent families, yet the analysis assigns it a disproportionately high share of portfolio strength and the highest average patent quality across the three technology fields. That helps explain why Figure AI, Apptronik and Agility Robotics remain important despite China’s lead in volume. Germany appears through Agile Robots, while the measured competitive impact of German patents has recently improved.
What separates the leading groups
Fourier grew out of rehabilitation robotics and now transfers that experience into its GR humanoid series. AgiBot develops both robotic embodiments and embodied-AI models, spanning locomotion, interaction and manipulation. LimX Dynamics focuses on dynamic movement and general-purpose full-body platforms.
Pudu Robotics comes from commercial service robotics. Its experience in navigation, fleet orchestration and integrated joints may prove useful in the shift toward humanoids. Unitree develops important components such as motors, reducers, controllers and perception systems in-house, a degree of vertical integration that can affect cost and iteration speed.
Western developers emphasize specific work environments. Figure AI follows an integrated general-purpose hardware and software approach. Agile Robots combines industrial automation with AI. Apptronik initially positions Apollo for manufacturing and logistics, while Agility Robotics is developing Digit as a work platform for repeatable material-flow tasks.
Patent strength is not market readiness
A strong patent position can make imitation harder, improve negotiating leverage and support licensing or fundraising. It does not show whether a robot can work reliably for an entire shift, operate safely alongside people or deliver a competitive total cost of ownership. In humanoid robotics, decisive obstacles often sit at the interfaces between mechanics, power, perception, AI and maintenance.
Classification also matters. Patents for grippers, tactile sensing or motion planning can be used in cobots, medical robots and mobile platforms as well. The analysis reduces this ambiguity through technical classifiers and selection criteria, but it cannot predict every future application with certainty.
Five questions for industry and investors
- Deployment maturity: Are there paid pilots and transparent data on uptime, safety and cycle time?
- Manufacturing: Does the company control critical components and its supply chain?
- Learning: How quickly can the system transfer to a new task without programming every movement?
- Total cost: Do the economics include integration, power, maintenance, remote support and downtime?
- Protection: Do the patents cover core functions and commercially important markets?
Conclusion: a useful early indicator with clear limits
The patent-based top 10 shows where companies are concentrating on the technical foundations of humanoid robotics. China’s breadth is unmistakable, while US developers counter with high average patent impact and focused industrial programs. Agile Robots keeps Europe visible in this selection.
Anyone looking for future winners should combine this ranking with operational data, manufacturing capacity, customer retention and cost development. Patents can create a barrier to entry, but the decisive test takes place in factories, warehouses and other real working environments.
