Focus on Work Instead of Universality
Agility Robotics emerged in 2015 from legged robotics research at Oregon State University. Its predecessor, Cassie, provided the basis for Digit, a bipedal robot with arms and gripping capability. Unlike some competitors, Agility focuses its early applications on material movement and container logistics.
This limitation makes economic sense. A clear process can be measured against existing manual or automated solutions. Digit does not need to master every tool immediately, but first reliably move, pick up, and place items between stations.
Digit and RoboFab
Digit was developed for human-designed logistics environments. Agility mentions deployments with partners like GXO, Amazon, Toyota, and Mercado Libre. According to the company, the RoboFab factory in Salem has a peak capacity of 10,000 robots per year.
However, capacity describes what a facility can theoretically achieve. For market evaluation, the systems actually produced, accepted, and productively used are what count.
Safety and Operation
Agility is working on certification and cooperative operation. With humanoid robots, safety is a property of the complete application: speed, load, gripper, environment, and behavior in case of errors must all be validated together.
The strongest metric is documented transport cycles in customer facilities. Additionally, the market requires data on availability, average downtime, personnel interventions, and cost per unit moved.
Editorial Classification
Agility belongs to the top tier because product, factory, and defined application fit together. The company promises less universality than some competitors and thereby gains credibility. Whether this results in a scalable business depends on the transition from selected fleets to standardized rollouts.
Assessment of development status
Digit works on selected customer projects and has documented extensive transport cycles. Delivery is limited; the planned maximum factory capacity is not equivalent to current production.
