![200 Cleaning Robots Across 25 Airports: The Integrator Becomes the Product 2 [Image content created with AI] Autonomous cleaning robots work as a coordinated fleet in an airport terminal [Image content created with AI]](https://alpha-bionic.info/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/airport-cleaning-robot-fleet.jpg)
More than 200 autonomous cleaning robots are now operating across 25 airports, according to SoftBank Robotics and Flagship Facility Services. The figure matters because it shifts attention from the individual service robot to the real scaling challenge: integrating heterogeneous machines into live shift plans, safety rules and maintenance workflows.
The partners report more than 100,000 operating hours and almost 500 million square feet cleaned, equivalent to roughly 46 million square metres. The fleet is said to cover close to one million square feet per day. Since 2024, the deployment has doubled from 100 robots at 15 locations to more than 200 machines across 25 airports.
A fleet, not a single robot model
Airports require different cleaning methods, including sweeping, scrubbing, mopping and vacuuming. The programme therefore uses several robot types rather than one standard machine. Each must fit the surface, floor material, passenger flow and available operating window.
That makes the integrator the central actor. It selects machines, connects telemetry and scheduling, trains staff and organises maintenance. The customer is not simply buying a robot, but a reliable service inside a complex operation.
Orchestration becomes the product
Discussions about service robotics often focus on sensors, navigation and battery life. In large fleets, less glamorous factors determine value. Who fixes a fault before the next shift? How are machines charged? Which area was actually cleaned? And how does the system respond to a closed zone or an unexpected crowd?
SoftBank Robotics is increasingly positioning itself as an orchestrator rather than solely a robot manufacturer. Flagship contributes access to airport operations and day-to-day facilities expertise. This combination may matter more than the brand of an individual robot, because operators need mixed fleets and the freedom to replace hardware over time.
Large operating figures, limited transparency
The published metrics come from the companies involved. They have not provided a complete airport list, availability rates, failure data, costs or an independently calculated return on investment. The area cleaned also says little on its own about quality or labour hours saved.
Even with those caveats, the fleet size is a meaningful market signal. Service robotics moves beyond pilots when integrators take responsibility for the end-to-end process. The Alpha Bionic perspective is clear: in commercial robotics, the product is no longer only the machine, but its dependable integration into a running operation.
