The Cleaning Robot That Scrubs at Night—and Runs Ads by Day

The PUDU ET1 cleaning robot arrives with an unusually simple promise: clean the tight aisles and small commercial floors that larger autonomous scrubbers struggle to reach. Then add an optional 21.5-inch screen and the same machine can carry promotions while it moves through a store.

That combination makes the ET1 more than another floor-care robot. It tests a bigger retail idea: can one mobile platform perform a necessary back-of-house task, become visible marketing space during opening hours and eventually help manage store operations? The concept is compelling. The available evidence, however, is still mostly a product specification—not a proven return-on-investment study.

What PUDU actually announced

PUDU introduced the ET1 on August 12, 2026 as an “AI-native compact scrubber-dryer robot” for small commercial spaces. The machine combines sweeping, scrubbing, vacuuming and dust-mopping. A front-sweep, rear-scrub layout is designed to handle dry debris and wet stains in a single pass.

The robot is notably compact: 500 × 380 × 580 millimetres and about 45 kilograms. PUDU says it can pass through a gap 50 centimetres wide and 60 centimetres high, making it suitable for convenience stores, cafés, small supermarkets, showrooms and other spaces where a full-size autonomous scrubber may be impractical.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independently measured Alpha Bionic test results. Multiplying the quoted efficiency by the runtime produces a theoretical range of roughly 750 to 2,880 square metres per charge. Real coverage will be lower or higher depending on floor layout, obstacles, repeated passes, stains, docking trips and the selected cleaning mode.

The dock may matter more than the robot

Autonomy is not only about navigation. Cleaning robots create dirty water, collect hair and debris, consume detergent and eventually need their rollers and squeegees cleaned. If staff must service the machine after every run, part of the labour saving disappears.

PUDU therefore emphasizes an eight-function station. It is designed to charge the robot, clean and spin-dry the roller, rinse the squeegee, refill clean water, drain waste water, dose cleaning agent and heat water. The company says the station can supply water at up to 85°C while the robot maintains temperature during cleaning.

There is also automatic dust collection into the ET1’s 2.5-litre container. PUDU says this can reduce emptying to about once a week. That claim will depend heavily on the environment: a bakery entrance, grocery aisle and fashion showroom generate very different debris loads.

For buyers, the installation question is therefore larger than finding parking space for a robot. The station needs power, and automatic water refill and drainage require appropriate site planning. Detergent, roller wear, filter replacement and access for maintenance belong in the cost model.

Why the advertising screen changes the story

The optional upright display turns the ET1 into a moving digital-signage surface. PUDU says the screen can support brand promotions, event marketing and dynamic information. Large flat body panels can also carry custom wraps.

In a small store, that can create three possible revenue or value streams:

  • Operational value: the robot performs routine floor cleaning.
  • Marketing value: the screen carries promotions, wayfinding or store messages.
  • Attention value: a moving machine is more noticeable than another static screen.

But a screen does not automatically create profitable advertising. Retailers still need a content workflow, campaign ownership, scheduling rules and evidence that customers notice or act on the message. The ET1 product page does not publish ad-impression measurement, shopper-attribution features or a revenue-sharing model.

That distinction matters. The current product is clearly capable of displaying content. It is not, based on the public specification, a complete retail-media analytics platform.

Does the robot watch shoppers?

A mobile robot needs perception to map a store, avoid people and obstacles, recognize floor types and react to stains. PUDU says the ET1 uses “AI Magic Cleaning,” automatic mapping, stain recognition and adaptive scrubbing. The product page does not describe the full sensor package or specify whether advertising is personalized using shopper data.

It would therefore be misleading to claim that the ET1 profiles customers. It would be equally careless for a buyer to ignore data governance. Before deployment, a retailer should ask what the robot records, which data leave the building, how long they are retained, who can access them and whether video or diagnostic data are used to improve cloud services.

Industry guidance for connected cleaning robots increasingly stresses data minimisation, camera transparency and access controls. In Europe, these questions also affect GDPR responsibilities, signage, processor agreements and cross-border data transfers. The correct policy depends on the actual configuration and data flow—not simply on the presence of a camera or screen.

Five questions that decide the business case

  1. How much human time is genuinely removed? Include rescue events, refilling, cleaning modules, moving displays and exception handling.
  2. Can it clean during business hours? A compact footprint helps, but crowded aisles, shopping carts and temporary displays can reduce coverage.
  3. What does the full installation cost? Purchase or lease price, dock, plumbing, software, connectivity, consumables, service and staff training all count.
  4. Who runs the advertising? A screen without fresh content, campaign governance and measurement may become decoration rather than revenue.
  5. What data are processed? Buyers need a written map of sensors, storage, cloud access, retention and deletion—not a verbal assurance.

PUDU has not published a list price or an independent payback calculation on the ET1 product page. That means any confident claim about “saving 50 percent” or paying for itself within a fixed number of months would require site-specific evidence.

A fast-growing but still practical robot market

The ET1 enters a service-robot market that is shifting from demonstrations to measurable operational tasks. The International Federation of Robotics recorded nearly 199,000 professional service robots sold in 2024, up 9 percent year over year. Floor cleaning is one of the clearest applications because the task is repetitive, measurable and usually takes place in structured environments.

PUDU is also entering this product launch from a position of scale. A 2025 market report cited by the company and Frost & Sullivan ranked PUDU first in global commercial service-robot revenue and shipments, with approximately 25 percent and 23 percent shares respectively. It also attributed about 29 percent of commercial cleaning-robot revenue to PUDU. These figures were distributed in a company press release and should be read as market-research claims rather than audited financial disclosures.

Scale can still matter to customers. A larger installed base can support spare-parts availability, software updates, service partners and accumulated field data. It does not eliminate the need to test the exact robot in the exact store.

The real opportunity: one mobile platform, several jobs

The most interesting ET1 feature may not be hot-water scrubbing or the 21.5-inch display by itself. It is the attempt to stack several store functions onto one autonomous base.

Today that means cleaning plus digital signage. Tomorrow similar platforms could combine cleaning with shelf alerts, wayfinding, environmental monitoring or basic inventory observations. Each added function can improve utilisation—but also increases software complexity, privacy obligations and the risk that a failure affects several processes at once.

Retailers should therefore resist both extremes. The ET1 is not merely a vacuum with a tablet attached; its compact cleaning and docking system addresses a real operational gap. But it is also not yet proof that mobile advertising will finance autonomous cleaning.

Bottom line

The PUDU ET1 packages four cleaning modes, automated maintenance and a large optional screen into a robot small enough for narrow commercial spaces. That makes it visually compelling and potentially useful for retailers that cannot accommodate larger machines.

The decisive numbers are still missing: purchase price, service cost, intervention rate, verified coverage in a live store and measurable advertising performance. The best evaluation will not ask whether the robot looks futuristic. It will ask how many clean, dry square metres it delivers per paid hour—and whether the screen creates value after the novelty wears off.
