Dexterity before Bipedalism

Sanctuary AI was founded in 2018 in Vancouver. Phoenix combines a humanoid upper body and dexterous hands with a rolling base. This decision is pragmatic: In many indoor environments, rolling is more efficient and stable than bipedal walking, while the hands generate the actual work value.

The company focuses on tasks that require perception, selection, and manipulation of changing objects.

Carbon and Training Data

Carbon is the AI control system behind Phoenix. Teleoperation and demonstrations provide data from which new skills are intended to emerge. Generation 8 was explicitly revised for better cameras, telemetry, and faster manufacturing.

This data orientation is plausible because fine motor work contains numerous rare error cases. What is crucial is how well learned skills transfer to new objects and environments.

Commercial Perspective

A rolling platform can become economically viable faster on flat factory and commercial floors than a complex biped. Limits arise with stairs, uneven surfaces, and workplaces that require full-body movement.

For customers, the degree of autonomy, remote access, data protection, and intervention rate must be clear. A robot can be productive even if humans occasionally help; however, the costs of this operating model must be honestly included.

Editorial Classification

Sanctuary shows that humanoid work does not necessarily require humanoid legs. The focus on hands, data, and tasks is convincing. The economic evaluation now depends on longer-term pilot data and the reduction of human support.
