The post-labor economy as a possible future scenario
A central concept in the debate is the so-called post-labor economy. This is an economy in which human labor is no longer the most important basis for value creation. Machines take over a large part of production and services.
Experts predict that up to 60-80% of today’s jobs could be automated in the next 10 to 15 years. This development is driven by exponential growth in AI technology.

A frequently discussed answer to automation is the unconditional basic income (UBI). Every citizen receives a regular payment from the state. This occurs regardless of income, assets or employment.
The goal is to secure the basic needs of all people. UBI could create social stability, especially in a future with fewer traditional jobs.
Proponents argue that this gives people more freedom. You could focus more on education, creativity, or social work.
However, critics also see risks. A frequently cited objection is the possible decline in work motivation. There is also the question of how to finance such a system.

An example can be seen in Germany. Between 1994 and 2014, around 275,000 jobs were lost in the manufacturing sector due to automation.At the same time, however, new jobs were created in other sectors. Areas such as IT, renewable energies and digital services are growing particularly strongly.
The biggest challenge concerns the so-called intermediate qualification level. Many routine jobs are disappearing, while at the same time highly qualified specialists are in greater demand.
That’s why lifelong learning is becoming increasingly important. Employees need to regularly adapt their skills.
The future of work will therefore be heavily influenced by human-machine interaction. Successful societies will be those that actively promote continuing education and technological adaptation.
Labor market research: Automation does not equal unemployment
Automation potential describes activities that can be changed technically – not the number of jobs that will actually be eliminated. Investment costs, regulation, expertise, demand and new tasks influence the result. Therefore, forecasts of a complete “end of work” are not a reliable prediction, but a scenario.
OECD analyzes show both productivity opportunities and unequal transition risks. For companies, complementing human skills is often economically more powerful than pure substitution. A study on human-robot complementarity presented in 2026 argues that competitive advantage that is difficult to copy arises precisely from collaboration.
A robot economy would not affect every country in the same way
High-income economies with ageing workforces may use robotics to maintain output despite labour shortages.
